“A symptom is often the only language a person has left. My work begins by learning to read it with you.”

Most people come to me because something has stopped working. Sleep, a relationship, the ability to get through an ordinary week. My first task is not to name the problem quickly. It is to understand what the difficulty is doing in your life and what it may be protecting. My first training was in medicine. I qualified as a medical doctor and spent over twenty years working as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist before I began practising psychotherapy in Ontario. That background still shapes how I listen. I pay attention to history, to the body and to the pattern underneath the story, not only to the words on the surface.

I see individuals and couples. People come to me with anxiety and social anxiety, depression, panic, obsessive-compulsive difficulties, trauma and PTSD, grief, long-running stress, low self-esteem, the aftermath of abuse, and sexual concerns. Nothing on that list is treated as unspeakable here. What I offer is not one method applied to everyone. I may draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) when a belief needs to be tested against evidence, Gestalt Therapy when something needs to be felt rather than explained, and the Gottman Method or Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) when the pain lives between two people rather than inside one.

Couples have been a large part of my practice for over twenty years. Partners almost never arrive agreeing on what the problem is. Much of the early work is slowing the conversation down far enough that each of you can hear what the other is actually asking for.
