Later life brings changes few of us are prepared for. A spouse no longer in the next room. A diagnosis that reorganizes the week. A house that has grown quiet. Therapy for seniors at 101 Psychotherapy gives you an unhurried hour to talk those changes through with someone whose only task is to listen and help you make sense of them. Counselling for seniors runs in person in Vaughan or by secure video across Ontario, and the first 30-minute assessment costs nothing.

It Is Not Too Late to Start Therapy
Many older adults were raised to keep difficult feelings private and to see coping alone as a sign of strength. That belief runs deep, and it stops a lot of people from ever asking for help. There is no age at which therapy stops being worthwhile, and you do not need a diagnosis, a referral or a crisis to book an appointment. Years of life experience are an asset in this work rather than an obstacle. You already know your own patterns, what you have lived through, and what matters to you now.
What Brings Older Adults to Therapy
There is no single reason people reach out in later life. These come up most often:
- Grief after the death of a spouse, a sibling or a friend of sixty years.
- Low mood that has settled in and will not lift.
- Worry circling around health, test results and appointments.
- Sleep that has changed and refuses to settle.
- Lost independence, and the shift in identity behind it.
- Friction with adult children over care, driving or living arrangements.
- Retirement that delivered more hours and less purpose.
- Life review, the work of making sense of what happened and what still matters.
Loneliness and Social Isolation in Later Life
Loneliness is the theme we hear most, and it is rarely about being alone in a room. It is about a circle that has thinned: friends who have died, children who moved away, a licence given up, a bus route that stops feeling manageable in February. Statistics Canada found about one in five Canadians aged 65 and older reported loneliness in 2019 and 2020, rising to roughly three in ten among those who were widowed. For older immigrants the picture is sharper: immigrants make up 30% of Canadians aged 65 or older, and European and non-European immigrants alike show higher odds of loneliness than the Canadian-born population. Statistics Canada suggests disrupted social networks and language barriers may be part of the reason. That is one reason we work in Russian and Farsi as well as English. Talking about grief and loss is easier in your first language.

For Adult Children Supporting an Aging Parent
If you are reading this for a parent rather than for yourself, this part is yours.
Supporting an aging parent asks a great deal: appointments and paperwork, the slow grief of watching someone change, and the guilt that arrives whenever you feel worn down by it. Caring for aging parents is work, and wanting support of your own is reasonable. You are welcome to book for yourself, whether or not your parent ever becomes a client.
Therapy, Primary Care and Psychiatry in One Place
We share our Vaughan location with 101 Medical Centre, a family medicine and specialty clinic with an on-site pharmacy. Where it is clinically indicated, psychiatric assessment and medication management can be arranged with the psychiatry team at 101 Medical Centre as part of an individualized care plan, and a physician’s referral is required. For anyone already juggling appointments across the city, one address for therapy, primary care and psychiatry is often the practical difference.

Sessions from $100
Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist are not covered by OHIP. Our fees start at $100, against a usual range of $150 to $270 across the GTA, and many extended health plans reimburse part of the cost. The first 30-minute assessment is free, so you can meet a therapist before spending anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it ever too late to start therapy?
No. It works as well for older adults as for younger ones, and there is no age at which it stops being useful. The regret we hear most is not having started sooner.
What kind of therapy works best for older adults?
That depends on what you are carrying. Cognitive behavioural therapy has strong support for low mood, worry and sleep trouble. Grief and loss usually call for something slower and more open-ended. We suggest an approach after the first assessment, not before it.
What kind of counselling is commonly used for the elderly?
Talking therapies are the mainstay. What gets labelled elderly counselling, geriatric counselling or elderly therapy is usually ordinary one-to-one psychotherapy, adapted for pace, hearing, memory and any physical limits in the room. It is the same therapy, delivered with those things in mind.
How do i talk to a parent who does not want therapy?
Lead with the specific thing you noticed, and keep it brief. Comparing it to seeing a specialist for any other part of health lands better than calling it a mental health conversation. If it goes nowhere, book for yourself; many families begin that way.
Can sessions be done from home?
Yes, by secure video anywhere in Ontario, which suits anyone who has stopped driving or finds travel tiring. Never used a video call? We will set it up with you over the phone.
