What Is Family Therapy?
Family therapy is a shared, confidential process in which several members of a family sit down together with a registered psychotherapist to understand what is straining their relationships. Also called family counselling or family psychotherapy, it treats the household as a system, so rather than putting the spotlight on one person, the work explores the patterns, roles and communication habits that keep everyone stuck. That relationship focus is what sets it apart from individual therapy, which supports one person. Families often reach out during conflict, a major transition or a painful season, and you can begin without a diagnosis or a referral.
Who Family Therapy Is For?
Family therapy can help almost any family that wants to feel closer. We regularly work with parents and their teenage or adult children, blended and step-families finding their footing, and extended families supporting one another through a diagnosis, a separation or a loss. Whether your household is facing a specific crisis or simply growing apart, a family therapist gives everyone involved a place to be heard and to rebuild connection at a pace that suits you.
What Family Therapy Can Help With
Families come to us for many reasons. In family sessions we regularly support communication breakdowns and recurring conflict, major life transitions such as separation, divorce, relocation or a new baby, blended and step-family dynamics, grief and loss, intergenerational patterns passed down through the family, and the strain when one member is struggling with their mental health or behaviour. When the focus is really on one person or one relationship, we will point you to the right service, such as child and teen therapy, parenting support or couples therapy.

How Family Sessions Work
Beginning family therapy is simpler than most families expect. It starts with a free consultation, where you share what is happening and get a feel for how we work. Your first full session usually brings everyone together, so your therapist can hear each person and see how the family functions as a whole. After that, sessions might include the whole family or smaller groupings, such as a parent and teen, depending on what will move things forward. Throughout, your therapist stays neutral and never takes sides, and no single member is required at every session. There is no referral to chase, and every family is welcome exactly as it is.
Our Approach and Modalities
Every family is different, so we do not force one method onto yours. Our psychotherapists work mainly with Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), family systems and systemic approaches, and attachment-based work, and they bring in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based techniques when these add value. Your therapist will talk you through the approach they suggest for your situation and the thinking behind it.

Simple, Affordable Pricing
Cost should not be the reason a family puts off getting help. Across the GTA, family sessions typically sit in the $150 to $270 range. At 101 Psychotherapy, family therapy starts at $100, and your first consultation is free, so your family can meet a therapist and ask questions before committing to anything. Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist are not covered by OHIP; most extended health benefit plans, however, reimburse them, and we provide receipts you can submit to your insurer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is family therapy covered by OHIP in Ontario?
Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist are not typically covered by OHIP. Most extended health benefit plans, though, do include Registered Psychotherapist services, and we give you a receipt to claim reimbursement from your insurer. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to see what’s covered under your plan.
How much does family therapy cost?
At 101 Psychotherapy, family therapy sessions start at $100 and your first consultation is free.
What are the types of family therapy?
Common approaches include Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, family systems and structural approaches, and attachment-based work. Your therapist will suggest the one that best fits your household.
What is the difference between a family therapist and a regular therapist?
A family therapist works with the household as a whole and focuses on the relationships and patterns between people, while an individual therapist focuses on one person. Our Registered Psychotherapists do both and will help you choose the right fit.
Does the whole family have to attend?
Not always. Your first session usually includes everyone, but later sessions may involve smaller groups, and not every member has to attend every time. It can still help even if one person is unsure at first.
Will the therapist take sides?
No. Your therapist’s role is to create a safe space where every member feels heard, and to stay neutral so everyone can work through things together.
Can we do family therapy online?
Yes. We offer secure online family therapy sessions across Ontario, so members can join from different locations when needed.
